The City

A city the players can push against, without forty pages of lore. Roll a handful of dice and get a named, mapped and governed settlement, then fill it with taverns, guilds, temples and trouble.

The city

The home base that plays back

Most campaigns treat the town as a shop and a bed. The City treats it as a place where things happen while the party is busy elsewhere.

Every table answers a question you would otherwise have to make up on the spot. Who runs the tavern, what is on the menu tonight, which guild is hiring, what the shopkeeper hides behind the counter, and what happens in the alley after dark.

Michael Sollien built it as a companion to the West Marches and Hexcrawl series, so the town the players return to has as much life as the wilderness they leave for.

Eight rolls to a city you can run

The opening chapter turns dice into a settlement. The book walks through a worked example, a forest village called Kingsfall, from the first roll to the finished map.

Questions

Before you buy

Which game system does it work with?

Any fantasy RPG. The book is a set of roll tables and procedures with no stat blocks, so it works with Shadowdark, OSR games, 5e, Pathfinder 2e or whatever you already run.

Is it only for big cities?

No. The generator starts by rolling the type of settlement, so the same tables give you a forest village, a market town or a walled city.

How does it fit with West Marches and Hexcrawl?

It was built as a companion to both. West Marches needs a home base the players return to, and a hexcrawl needs towns along the way. The City stands on its own as well.

Is it available in print?

Yes. It is a 58-page softcover, print on demand from DriveThruRPG, and stocked by game shops in several countries. Shops can order at retailer terms on the vendor page.

Was AI used to make it?

No. The text, the art, the layout and the editing are all made by people. Every illustration is drawn by Nicolai Strøm.

Is there more coming?

The City is the first book in the Sandbox Toolkit series. More titles are planned.
